![]() Performance for these ovens differs across the board. Getting your frozen fries to be crispy is easy with certain air fryer settings. ![]() When we talk about the air fry function on select ranges, we’re really talking about a specialized convection setting designed to maximize heat circulation for crispy results. However, when you especially want a crisp result from the food you're cooking, increasing the speed of the air flow can accomplish the task. Convection cooking always involves fans, which is why it takes less time and you typically need to convert recipes from standard baking mode to convection. So how is the convection setting different from the air fry setting in an oven? Air speed. Convection capabilities are becoming more the standard than the exception. The convection oven is certainly not a new phenomenon, although it has recently gained tremendous popularity across the country. (If you’re interested in learning more, we have more detailed explanations of how air fryers work.)īecause of their air circulation technology, air fryers are essentially miniature convection ovens. The convection fans circulate hot air quickly and evenly to make your favorite foods crispy without deep frying. We’ve read reviews citing this process as too complex and unintuitive.Air fry ovens are essentially convection ovens equipped with air fry trays.Īll countertop air fryers, including air fry toaster ovens-use the same basic technology: electric heating elements, convection fans, and frying trays or baskets. Turning an element on requires three steps: turning on the cooktop, selecting the element, and scaling up the power with a touch-based sliding scale. However, its design isn’t as straightforward. The KitchenAid KSIB900ESS is the one exception, as it has solid reviews and a high-heat self-cleaning option it also uses induction technology, and like the PHS930, it has touch-based burner controls. We dismissed the Maytag MES8800FZ and KitchenAid KSEG700E for similar reasons: Each of these models offers only AquaLift self-cleaning and has subpar owner reviews. However, the owner reviews were a bit concerning, with far too many people complaining about the finish chipping or “peeling off.” People also seem to hate Whirlpool’s proprietary steam self-clean tech, called AquaLift, which the company frequently throws in without a high-heat alternative. ![]() It rivaled the GE Profile PHS930 in price and had comparable cooktop and oven specs. The now-discontinued Whirlpool WEE745H0FS was another close contender. ![]() That’s why we’ll continue to keep our guides to freestanding gas ranges and slide-in gas ranges updated with recommendations and tips on how to cook with gas more safely. Still, we know that some people prefer cooking with gas or may not have the option to switch to an induction or radiant-electric range. And if you’re concerned about sustainability, electric appliances can also be powered by renewable energy sources like wind or the sun. Any electric stove beats gas at cooking efficiency. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported in January 2023 that it plans to strengthen voluntary safety standards on new gas stoves as concerns grow around their health risks a December 2022 study found that 12.7% of childhood asthma cases could be attributed to gas stove use. Gas stoves may be potentially risky for your health, even with ventilation, in part because they emit benzene and methane. ![]() If you have the option, there are other good reasons to consider an electric stove over a gas version. ![]()
